Coronavirus Family Tree Shows Six Linages

Coronavirus does have a family tree, and so far, this is what we know. Coronavirus are RNA viruses, meaning that, genetically, they have the highest mutation rate of any known biological entity. To develop a family tree, about 30,000 coronavirus genomes from all over the world have been sequenced.

Based on these sequences, the family tree reveals that after one month of its arrival in December 2019, two new lineages of coronaviruses were discovered. As of now, there are six known variations found worldwide, which is not many. “The coronavirus genome is exceptionally stable,” says Samuel Díaz-Muñoz, a virologist at the University of California, Davis. This family tree will surely grow in the near future. At the present, the only good news is that no one variation spreads faster than any other.
