Light Living

Since 1986 Tom Bodett’s famous line “We’ll leave the light on for you” raised Motel 6 in the eye of the traveler. Leaving the light on is a down home indication to guests of your open invitation.

It is of necessity for us to have the light of Heaven’s truth to guide our every move. Left to ourselves we bump into things. We will stub our toes in the harrowing darkness of sin. Like driving a car at night, we need to have headlights on to see. A car without its lights on at night is dangerous for that driver and others especially on a dark country road. The scriptures speak to this idea. “O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.” (Psalm 43:3)

As you travel the dark and dangerous roads of this world, whether you live in the city or the countryside, turn on the light, on high beam if necessary. The light will help you to avoid obstacles in the way, react to sudden moving objects that come out of nowhere. Keep the lights on in order to make it home safely. It was a deep dark night. The clouds covered the moon. The long day of toil and travel drained mother, the driver of the car. We, kids, tired from fighting and arguing and playing sat half asleep in the car. Mother’s voice woke us up as we got closer to Grandmamma and Granddaddy’s house. That hill blinded our view. Just as we rounded the curve down to right we saw it. Granddaddy had left the porch light on for us. Remember Jesus is the light that will guide us to His house — His tabernacle — where the redeemed are home at last.

By the way, while we are traversing this pilgrim land, Jesus said that he would leave the light on for us at the Cross, in His church and in the tabernacle of Heaven. This illuminating radiance will never go out because Jesus is the light and the tabernacle all at the same time. “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God” (Revelation 21:3).

New York City, deemed the city that never sleeps. People are afoot at all times throughout the day and night. Yet, there are some who cannot afford a house or apartment. They would accept a single room. The Bible speaks of Jesus dawning his building expertise as He is preparing a place for all who believe in His great salvation (John 14:1–3).

“And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof” (Revelation 21:23).

Oh, how I long to dwell in the everlasting light. How about you?
