A Kitchen Tale

There is nothing like a lazy rainy Sunday evening. Curled up on my sofa with a book. I paused occasionally to catch a glimpse of the rain-drenched greenery outside my window. It was heaven. The only thing missing was a hot cup of tea…

Suddenly the doorbell rang. Aadi obligingly got up to check. A few minutes later, from the corner of my eye, I saw him lugging a bag into the kitchen.

Ah. The groceries. And delivered on time! I was impressed.

I generally used to buy all our monthly quota of vegetables and provisions from the market near-by. I could rattle off the prices of everything there like a professional and being a regular customer, I would get them at decent rates and good discounts — a win-win for all! But this afternoon I was too lazy to step out. And Aadi was just waiting for a chance to spare me the trouble.

I was still in that siesta mood. Aadi is capable of sorting the groceries himself. I buried myself deeper into the comfy plump sofa. And maybe if he is in the mood he will make his trademark masala tea as well! I smacked my lips.

Aadi was an excellent cook. During his stint abroad, he used to do everything — getting the veggies, cutting, chopping, cooking, plating… It was like watching a Master Chef show on Skype…

Though no expert, I slowly took over the kitchen after our wedding and he got relegated to the sidelines. He rarely cooks nowadays. As I saw it, making masala tea was his chance to shine and I ‘permitted’ him that luxury!

“Dear…” came a weak sound from the kitchen.

Aadi uses that particular term of endearment only when something is wrong. Horribly wrong.

What happened? Did he hurt himself? Burn down my kitchen? Or the kids…?

I caught myself just in time remembering that we didn’t have children yet.

I ran into the kitchen, my heart in my mouth, “Wha…”

“How do I put this in the fridge?” he asked, blinking innocently, pointing to something below.

A big round orange thing was plonked square in the middle of the kitchen floor…

“Well you just said ‘a piece’… Nothing about the size of the pumpkin…” he protested weakly in response to my withering look.

Well, I have now become an expert at cooking — pumpkin chutney for breakfast, pumpkin olan for lunch, pumpkin pie for tea and pumpkin soup for dinner… Every single day…
