How to Edit Images

When editing images, you should consider resolution, format and size.

To meet these requirements, I use Photoshop, Lightroom or Illustrator. Adobe tends to be the most popular tool available for photo and graphic editing. Adobe also has great tutorials if you are a complete novice and would like to learn photo editing.

Screens are made up of tiny square pixels. The number of pixels varies. For example, a Macbook Pro 13" has a resolution of 2560 by 1600, with 227 pixels per inch. The 15" has a resolution of 2880 by 1800, with 220 pixels per inch.

The resolution matters for print. Print images are best saved at a resolution of 300 DPI (dots per inch) or higher to ensure they are sharp. On web, resolution is not as critical because screens determine the size of an image based on its width and height in pixels. They should, however, only be saved in pixel

Format is extremely important. Prior to doing any multimedia, I had no idea that jpeg or png served different purposes. Websites primarily use jpeg, png or gif formats. If you select the wrong format, your image may look like low quality or become warped.

JPEG is used when the image has many colors. This could even be a picture of a beach, where the sky or water may appear to be one solid color but is actually made up of multiple colors that have a subtle difference.

GIF or PNG is used when an image has few colors or areas that are largely one color. Often graphic design is more minimalistic and is made up of a solid flat colors. Illustrations, logos and diagrams can all be saved in this format

Images should be saved as the same height and width as you want it to appear on the relevant screen. For web development, if you are designing a page that will contain an image that is 500 pixels by 200 pixels, the image should match the height and width. Reducing an image is easily done with any photo editing tools. Keep in mind that you can’t increase the size of an image without affecting its quality.

Vector images are a common type of image for graphic design that does not fit into the categories above. Vectors are saved in SVG (scalable vector graphics) format and the dimensions can be increased or decreased without affecting the quality of the image.
