Confronting Confrontational Feedback

Ask three questions to know you succeed as leader

As team lead, I consider the happiness of the members of my team one of my primary responsibilities. I am convinced that the company I work for is best served by me, when I make sure that my team is happy. That they enjoy what they do. The only way I can make sure that I succeed in this effort is by getting feedback from my team on whether I am succeeding. Feedback that is confrontational most of the time. Feedback that I am happy to confront. Read in this article how I manage to get feedback on how happy my team is with me as their team lead.

Full disclosure, I asked my team for permission to share this article with you and they approved. And although I am not going to share their contact details, they are, and I am, fine when you reach out to them to get some more insights. That is of course, when you happen to know them.

The other day I was asked for my opinion on a matter. I don’t remember what that matter was, and that doesn’t matter. What matters is that I knew that I wrote an article about it. As you can guess, I could not find that particular article. It is the problem with the titles I choose for my articles. When I write the article, I am convinced that the title I chose is right on the mark. Two weeks later, my preferable sprint length, I must admit that those titles make less sense to me. If not anything else, it proves my point that two weeks is the ideal length of a sprint. After two weeks, everything that made sense two weeks ago, does not make any sense anymore. This month, February 2022, I had my quarterly 1-on-1 calls with my team. I schedule a 1-on-1 with every member of my team once a month. The first weekday every month, I have a call with each of them. Our 1-on-1s are scheduled for an hour, but I always plan a 30-minute at the end of that hour, so we do not have to stop conversation because of other commitments.
