How Much Motivation is Good for You

Some time motivation can ruin your life

One of the most dangerous things that all of us tend to fall for, is bullshit motivation.

Most of us look at motivational videos as life-changing, what we often don’t realize is that motivational videos can sometimes even ruin our life.

The question here is, how do these videos succeed in making us believe that it will change our life?

First of all, these videos are so well edited and it gives us a beautiful cinematic experience with a piece of heart-touching background music.

In fact, when I watch these videos, instead of being motivated I tend to take notes on how do they exactly edit these videos so well.

Because these videos are so well crafted with heart-touching music, we often tend to believe every single line they have said, and end up taking up some shitty advice that can ruin our life.

One day I was scrolling YouTube and found a video with millions of views where Steve Harvey (an American television host) is shouting on top of his voice saying rich people don’t sleep 8 hours a day, and then he quoted a line of the bible along with that.

Here is a cropped part of his video:

The video went viral, and thousands of people commented below the video saying that this is the best video on the Internet and stuff like that. So basically millions of people believed what Steve Harvey said.

Coincidentally while I was watching Steve Harvey's video I was also doing my research on the Amazon business model, and I found a video of Jeff Bezos saying that he gets 8 hours of sleep every day.

He was saying that sleep is his priority and he makes sure regardless of how busy his schedule is, he tries his best to sleep for 8 hours a day.

While a so-called best video on the internet said that rich people don’t sleep 8 hours a day on the other side, one of the richest men on the planet says sleep is his priority, but that didn’t go viral.

So the point is, as an individual we need to be extremely careful when we consume such content because it might have toxic implications.

So the first thing we need to understand is that sometimes even celebrities can give you shitty advice, they could even be your role model.

However, we need to know that they don’t give you shitty advice because they want to, but because they are humans and they tend to make mistakes so it’s not their fault.

We as a viewer need to be very careful about what advice we choose to take. We need to know how to filter these advices so that we can try to understand what works for us.

For example, on one side you got Elon Musk who will tell you to work for 80 hours a week on the other hand you got a supercool person Warren Buffett who literally will have only a handful of calendar entries for his entire month

So the point is the world has got all kinds of people and all kinds of advice but you need to know what suits you the best.

Most importantly do not ever watch motivational videos to escape from reality, use them to face reality.

Every time you watch something which says that this video will change your life or a YouTube thumbnail that says this speech broke the internet, take a step back and ask yourself, tomorrow when you woke up what you are going to do different, what is your action plan.

Because thinking without action and action without thinking both will give you the exact same result that is nothing.

And this reminds us what Henery Ford once said

And you know there are two kinds of people on this planet, the people who watch things happen and the people who make things happen, and this call to action habit will decide which category you will eventually fall into.
