Wealth Disparity Before The Great Fall

Bad boy billionaires, and Kylie Jenner or Taylor Swift on private jets: what fills the news indicates new attitudes

We are in two places at once.

Famously, Teddy Roosevelt took on the role of trustbuster. He saw that bankers and financiers had corrupted governments. He saw that development in the west had decimated the bison, plains, forests, and indigenous people. Furthermore, he was no more racist, or sexist than other rich white guys at the time, but his macho demeanor meant that he wanted to keep wild lands wild for the rugged, hunters and cowboys and the subservient frontier women and servants who would support those cowboys and army of frontiersmen.

He did not set out to separate the classes, but his high regard for conservation helped make such values universal.

TR was a man of his time, yet more forward-thinking than most capitalists. To his credit, he had a niece, Eleanor, and a distant cousin, Franklin, who would steer him in the direction of social concerns just a bit in their own ways of influence through the 1940's.

Ending oppression, especially of women, was not Teddy Roosevelt’s cup of tea, but because he preserved national parks, he gave the possibility to many persons indirectly to continue higher quality ways of life. For example, my mother’s first job was at a National Park. The setting there allows many a mind to wander free and realize the importance of resilience, autonomy, financial independence, and freedom itself.

Appreciating the splendor of nature is an extremely potent bonus.

Fast-forward to today. The Parks are in trouble due to the climate crisis. Not long ago, Yellowstone floods blocked the park, and more recently, Yosemite fires have imperiled thousand-year-old trees.
