How Does An Urge Feel?

You may have heard the ‘need’ to self-harm described as an urge, what does the urge feel like?

This is something I imagine feels different for everybody, so I’m going to speak from my own experience. It’s a unique feeling and an important one for others to understand. The urge to self-harm is so strong when it takes hold. It’s not the same as craving a particular food or wanting to do something.

Though it isn’t an addiction for everyone, for those of us who are addicted, it can be a physical need as much as an emotional one. When I’m feeling the urge, whether it’s due to being anxious or depressed, I feel it all the way deep inside myself. It’s rooted in my stomach and emanates from there. This feeling doesn’t last forever — if it did I’d be paralyzed by it by now — it does eventually pass. Distraction is the best way to get through that, to keep pushing past it with anything that engages my mind until the urge moves on.

The other half of the urge to self-harm is the thoughts. In my worst times, it doesn’t matter what I’m doing, there will be a constant running chatter in my brain vocalizing my desire to cut myself. This is especially strong during the week of my period when I still have so many intrusive thoughts. I used to think there was something wrong with me or that I was failing in recovery because I still had those thoughts. I’ve since learned that that isn’t the case at all, it’s quite a normal part of addiction.
