Google Knows Not much

For this reading response I choose to Google as I am on it on often, especially YouTube I was curious to see what they knew about me. I think the most interesting thing was that in order for these services to work I had to be signed into my google account, making me wonder if I am not signed in do they not kept data on me? Or if not signed in can I not see the data Google kept on me? First for Google I sought to see if the tracked history of where I been, but since I never sign in my account there was no official history of where I been. This makes it seem as though Google is not tracking me every move. While Google was not able to track my exact place of location, they did pinpoint my location to the United States, making me think they do track where I go, but do not let me know as I did not officially sign in using Google, therefore they do not want to seem as if they are tracking my every move. I also check my history of searches and mostly all that came up was YouTube. All the video that I have watched under my signed in account where there along with the time and date, again making it seem as though Google only tracks me if I am logged into my Google account. I also check under my YouTube history and my search history was pretty vague, but my watched video was pretty expansive. For example, it included every video that was “watched” meaning that video that were on autoplay counted as “watched” video, luckily, I was watching harmless video otherwise my history could be pretty bad, based on video that may pop up and I may have not watched them. The video history I watched was broken into the day, time and the video I was “watching”, which of course included Demi Lovato music.

Under the section of ads that topics that I like included country music, classical music and electro music all types of music that I hate. I usually listen to a lot of classical music in order to fall asleep as I have a restless mind. I never listen to country music, so I am not sure how that appeared. I also am not sure how electro appeared as I never listen to it. The only accurate one that it got was pop music, TV comedies and movies, which I am unsure how it got this information based on my youtube as I never search up TV comedies on Youtube, but I do search up trailer for movies. The ad section was mostly inferred based on ads I do not skip and things that like under my Google account. As I do not do like much under my Google name due to being a private person not much is correctly inferred about me.

Overall, my experience with what Goggle knows about me is what not really helpful. My experience was that since I am logged in in my Google account Google does not track all my data. In the John Herman reading, in explains that hate groups revealed tech companies control over the internet. The reading explained that organization such as Facebook and Google have the power to get rid of section of people of the internet. This type of power is hidden until, the hate groups demanded them to take action. In the reading, one representative from a big tech company, Matthew Prince explained the amount of power he has over the internet. Mr. Prince stated that he ‘‘ ‘woke up in a bad mood and decided someone shouldn’t be allowed on the internet, [and] No one should have that power’ ’’ (qtd. in John Herman). Mr.Prince statement is pretty alarming as he he felt like was in bad mood and could get me off the internet if he wanted. Part of the problem with the big tech companies that they present themselves as only preserving data that you want them to, rather than all data on the internet. This can be seen through Google stating it not able to come up with search history on me as I was not signed in, creating the illusion that they not overseeing all data on the internet and have complete control over who see it and who doesn’t. This take away their true power they have and give the false illusion of only saving data that users want saved.
